Jean Carzou (Karnik Zouloumian) (1907-2000)

1907 – Born in Aleppo (Syria).

1919 – Moved to Cairo (Egypt), where he began attending the Galustian Gymnasium.

1924 – Settled in Paris.

1930 – Graduated from the State School of Architecture while also attending the Grande Chaumière Academy. Received a first-class prize at the French Painters’ Exhibition.

From 1930 – His works were regularly exhibited at the “Salon des Indépendants,” “Ani” Society, and the “Association of Armenian Independent Painters.”

From 1939 – Held more than 100 solo exhibitions.

From 1941 – Exhibited at the “Salon d’Automne.”

From 1945 – Regular exhibitions at the “Drouant-David” Gallery.

1945 – Awarded the Ile-de-France First Prize.

1955 – Honored with the Grand Prize (Tokyo).

1956 – Awarded the Legion of Honor.

1958 – Received the title of “Chevalier of Arts and Letters.”

1950s-1960s – Worked as a stage designer for the Comédie-Française, La Scala, and the Paris National Theatre.

From 1977 – Became a full member of the French Academy of Painters.

1980 – Awarded the “Martiros Saryan” Medal.

1984 – Solo exhibitions held in Yerevan and Moscow.

2000 – Died in Paris.

2007 – A solo exhibition was held to celebrate his 100th birthday at the National Gallery of Armenia (Yerevan).

Numerous articles and monographs have been published about the artist.

Works are held in the Museum of Contemporary Art (Yerevan), numerous private galleries and collections around the world.
