Grigor Khanjyan (1926-2000)

1926 – Born in Yerevan.

1945 – Graduated from the P. Terlemezyan Art School (Yerevan).

1951 – Graduated from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts and Theater.

Multiple laureate of republican, all-Union, and international awards.

Since 1961 – Honored Artist of Armenia.

Since 1963 – Honored Worker of Art of the Armenian SSR.

Since 1967 – People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR.

1969 – Awarded the USSR State Prize.

Since 1973 – Full Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Since 1982 – Corresponding Member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences.

Since 1983 – People’s Artist of the USSR.

Awarded the Armenian SSR State Prize.

Worked in both painting and graphic arts (Parisian, Italian, Spanish, Mexican periods).

Illustrated several literary works, including Hovhannes Tumanyan’s “Lorcian Sak”, “Sasuntsi Davit”, Khachatur Abovian’s novel “Wounds of Armenia”, Paruyr Sevak’s “The Silent Bell Tower” and G. Emin’s “Dance of the Sasuntsis” poems, Mikhail Sholokhov’s short story “The Fate of a Man”, and others.

1981 – Created the large-scale multi-figure tapestry canvases “Vardanank” and “The Armenian Alphabet”.

1990 – Elected as a full member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences.

2000 – Passed away in Yerevan.

1990 – USA (Michigan, California, New Jersey).

2006 – Exhibition dedicated to the artist’s 80th anniversary (National Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan).

His works are held in the Contemporary Art Museum (Yerevan), the National Gallery of Armenia (Yerevan), and the Ministry of Culture of Armenia’s collections (Yerevan).
